In 2012, Island Health initiated a 5-year health research capacity building initiative developed in collaboration with the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. The vision for the initiative is:
A robust, self-sustaining health research community on Vancouver Island,
playing an essential role in the delivery of health services,
and improving health status and health care for the Island’s population.
Island Health recognizes its responsibility for delivering evidence-informed health care and the plan therefore includes a strong focus on knowledge mobilization and translation in addition to research. The capacity building strategy is designed to:
- Build capacity or sustainability or both, as part of every activity
- Support research which capitalizes on the unique features of the Island, supports the strategic aims of Island Health and its partners and allow for creative opportunism
- Collaborate and build on the strengths of Island Health and its partners
We are committed to building and sustaining strong and lasting research collaborations with our Island Partners, including the University of Victoria, Vancouver Island University, the UBC Island Medical Program, Royal Roads University, the BC Cancer Agency, and many well-established community-based research organizations.
Many new and exciting initiatives are currently underway to build infrastructure to support the growth of research at Island Health and on Vancouver Island.
