How do I become a Volunteer?

How old do I have to be to volunteer?
For adult volunteers: minimum 19 years of age.
For the Teen Program: must be attending High School (Grades 8 – 12), but check with individual site Coordinator/Manager of Volunteer Resources as some sites may differ.
How long are the volunteer service periods?
Generally 1-4 hours per week, depending upon assignment and site.
How many service periods per week?
Most programs require the volunteer to attend once a week.

How long a commitment do I have to make?
Most volunteer positions require a minimum commitment of six months, depending on the site and the assignment.
How long does the process take to become a volunteer?
Depending on the requirements of the volunteer position, the screening, orientation and training process generally take anywhere from 3-8 weeks.
Why does the process take so long?
We have a legal, moral and ethical responsibility to protect people within our care, some of whom can be very vulnerable. We want to make an appropriate placement for you and ensure that you are fully prepared to take on your volunteer responsibilities.
Is there an opportunity to move from one volunteer role to another?
Yes, we encourage you to seek new challenges and opportunities, but ask that you commit to your initial placement for at least three months. Depending on your availability, you may wish to offer your services in more than one volunteer assignment.

Can I do more than one volunteer position?
Yes, depending on your availability and the vacancies.
Do I need a Criminal Record check?
These are required when working with children and may be required for some other assignments, such as Medical Imaging, Emergency Departments, and Mental Health and Addictions. The Coordinator/Manager of Volunteer Resources will advise you accordingly.
Do you provide parking?
Yes, once you are registered as a volunteer, you will be issued with a 'coin card,' or Volunteer Parking Pass if your site has 'paid parking.'

Can I get a reference?
Yes, references will be given, upon written request, for volunteers seeking employment or entry to a course. Some sites may require completion of a minimum number of volunteer hours before a reference will be provided. Contact your Coordinator/Manager of Volunteer Resources for further information.
Will I be required to wear a uniform?
This will depend on your assignment and the site.
If my school timetable changes from term to term, is there flexibility in changing my volunteer placement?
Yes, there is flexibility in changing your volunteer placement, depending on availability in other areas.
