We are pleased you may be interested in volunteering at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Your role as a volunteer is to complement the professional role of hospital staff by enhancing services to patients and their families beyond the scope of regular patient care. Services provided by volunteers support the personal dignity, safety, security and quality care of patients.

Qualifications

To become a volunteer at RJH in the adult program, you must be over 18 years of age.(We also have a Volunteen program for youth 14-18 years.).You need to be available to volunteer once a week (same day and time each week) for at least six months. 

Intake Process

In addition to that described on How to Become a Volunteer and Frequently Asked Questions, all volunteers must attend a General Hospital Orientation arranged by Volunteer Resources before starting any assignments.

Volunteer Opportunities

Auxiliary Membership/Position

Established in 1924, the Auxiliary raises funds for needed equipment for the general comfort and well being of patients at Royal Jubilee Hospital. The Auxiliary has a busy shop that is staffed and run completely by volunteers. Auxiliary members are asked to volunteer for a 4-hour shift 3 times a month in our gift shop and to pay a yearly membership fee of $10. All money raised is used to purchase medical equipment for our hospital. Patient Placement

Accompany members of the public to specific departments in the hospital. The position needs friendly volunteers who are able to walk a good distance. Weekday shifts: morning 7 am - 11am or afternoon 11am – 3pm. Volunteers work in pairs.

Wayfinders

Greet visitors and provide directions to hospital services and departments. Weekday shifts:  8 -10 am; 10 am - 12 noon; 1pm - 3 pm.

Emergency Department

Spend time with patients and their family members. Previous hospital volunteer experience is preferred. Should be outgoing and a self-starter. Three-hour shift once per week. Monday to Sunday 10 am to 10 pm.

Medical Imaging

Greet patients and accompany them to specific areas for their procedure. Must like to chat with people and be able to walk for a four hour shift. Monday to Friday 8:30 am - 12:30 pm or 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm.

Geriatric Care Program

Greet outpatients and assist with a nutrition/exercise program for seniors. Social tea and conversation. Monday to Friday 1pm - 3 pm. Tuesday and Friday 10:00 am - 12:00 noon. Wednesday 10:30 am - 11:30 am and 2:00 - 3:00 pm.

Renal Dialysis Unit

Provide assistance and support to patients having dialysis and their family members.  Three-hour shift once per week. Monday to Sunday 7:30 am - 7 pm.

Pet Animal Therapy

This program offers patients in the Renal Unit, Acute Geriatric Psych and eric Martin Pavilion patients an opportunity to have pets visit them in the hospital setting.  All animals must be approved by VIHA and have certification from a local therapy program such as PATS (Pacific Animal Therapy Society).

Patient Support Volunteer

Visit one-to-one with patients on nursing units, listen to, read to, take for wheelchair walks outside and inside, etc.

Library Cart for Patients

Push a book cart through nursing units; offer patients free magazines or pocket books. Some time spent chatting/visiting with patients. A fair amount of walking is required. Monday to Sunday 10am -12 noon.

Library Coordinator

Organizes and maintains the library: books, shelves, book sale items, stocking, tidying, maintains, inventory.

Office Volunteer

Assist with office duties in the Volunteer Resources Department.  Photocopy, collate and put together education and patient packages. Once a week, 2 - 4 hours.

Musical Entertainers

Pianists and other musicians provide entertainment for the patients on the Acute Geriatric Psych Unit. Usually once a week for an hour.

Volunteen Program

Students 14-18 years of age who wish to assist patients by visiting, giving out ice water or delivering library books and magazines.Training sessions are held several times a year.
