Volunteer at Mt. Tolmie

About Volunteering

Mount Tolmie Extended Care Hospital provides care to 75 extended care residents, mainly elderly. It is located at 3690 Richmond Road, on the corner of Richmond and Cedar Hill X Roads. It is located on one of the main bus routes and has a stop right outside the door. Free parking is provided and there is ample parking located at the front and rear of the building.

Qualifications

You will need to commit to a minimum of 6 months or 60 hours.

Volunteer Opportunities

Activity Assistant

Assist staff with: set-up of activity; portering residents; participating with activities; and assisting with clean up. Some examples of activities are special events, entertainment, gardening, games, etc.

One-to-One Visitors

Provides visitation with some of our residents who enjoy one-on-one time with another person from the community. The visitation may include reading, outings, writing letters, reminiscing, listening, playing a game of cards, etc.

Palliative Care

Provides companionship to residents who are dying. These volunteers work closely with staff and family in providing this kind of volunteer support. This volunteer opportunity requires training or experience.

Dementia Care

Visit with residents who have some form of dementia. Volunteers are provided with a visiting kit to assist with reminiscing ideas.

Community Outing

Assist residents to access the community. These outings may include restaurant visits, movies, community events, shopping and seasonal celebrations. All expenses and transportation are provided.

ESL Student Visitation

Volunteers are matched up with residents who would enjoy assisting with English language skills and practice.

Family Visitations

Allows families to volunteer together. This assignment may include a small group activity, community outings or resident visitations.

Pet Animal Therapy

Offer the volunteer to visit the residents with their special animal friend. This also offers the resident an opportunity to have pets visit them in the hospital setting. All animals must have certification from a local therapy program such as PATS, St. John Ambulance, etc.

Appointment Escorts

Accompany residents to medical appointments. All transportation and expenses are provided and arranged by the unit clerk.

Entertainers

Provide residents with the stimulation of the arts. Entertainers are referred to therapy staff for scheduling.
